A Hunting Proposal....Love in the Outdoors!

Dove season here in Virginia is the kick off to our hunting season.  After a long summer, it is the day we all anticipate, to finally get out and hunt some birds.  This season was going to prove special to me in more ways than one. I recently had brought my Chesapeake Bay Retriever Mavis home after two months of training. I was ready to start working with her in the field and dove season would be a great start.

My boyfriend Kyle and I set out on September 7th to do a little evening dove hunt and get some training in with Mavis. This particular day it was boiling hot with no sign of fall weather in sight. Hunting on my family farm that I have hunted for years, the birds just not flying very well and I think we may have shot one at best. Kyle suggested we continue down the path and see if any doves were lingering on the other side of the field, back towards our pond.

This is where my stubborn nature combined with hunting experience sets in.  I told him there is just no need, the birds wouldn’t be there. In the past they have never flown around that side of the farm. After a few minutes, he finally convinced me to walk back down the path, guns in hand and dog at our side.  Knowing we were reaching a point in the path that Mavis was going to want to jump inthe water, I tried to get him to turn back, but he wouldn’t listen. I was fussing about the lack of birds every step of the way and Kyle very patiently told me everything is fine, we would just let Mavis swim and then head back. Enjoying a walk in Virginia heat and humidity isn’t my cup of tea.  As we reached the top of the pond bank, I saw decoys in the distance and it took me a moment to figure out what was going on. He had spelled out in decoys the words “Marry Me.” Kyle dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him even after my stubborn attempts to avoid the pond!  We laughed about how hard I made the proposal and in hind sight I truly did everything to avoid the walk back there!  It was an unforgettable moment and the perfect proposal for me, because it combined two things I love the most, my fiancé and duck hunting.
