Hunting with a Gift - A Hunting Mother's Story

It was opening morning and I was feeling crappy, but I was all ready to go hunting. For some reason I was sick as a dog, but I didn't let it stop me. After the sun came up, a doe came out with her twins. Watching them babies run and play just made me smile. They eventually made their way back into the woods. Trying to be stealthy while getting sick was tough, but I managed. Ended up propping my legs onto a branch and leaned back to ease the sickness. Thanks to my harness, I knew I wouldn't fall.

I was still sick the next morning, so I took a test then got dressed. Once I was ready, I went to look and it read "pregnant". So many emotions came over me, like shock and excitement. Even my husband was speechless yet happy as well. It wasn't planned but truly a blessing with many new adventures ahead. After a brief celebration, it was time to go hunt.

As I sat there in my stand, so many thoughts ran through my head. I knew everything was about to change. Even though I was full of joy in my heart, I was also full of doubt in my mind. Just then a doe came out with her baby. While watching them, I realized a mother's instinct would naturally kick in. That's when a feeling of peace overpowered my doubt. I might've ended the weekend empty handed, but my heart was overflowing with happiness.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Holly Overman

I grew up with a love of the outdoors, fishing and hiking through woods. It wasn't til I met my husband that I really got into hunting. He took me on my first hunt and even taught me how to shoot a bow. I was instantly hooked after that. He taught me the basics and I grew my own knowledge through self experience.
