I have tried 2 different types of the Hot Hands, the body & Hand Super warmer and the Hand Warmer. The Body & Hand Warmer says it is good for up to 18 hours of heat. While the hand warmers are good for up to 10 hours.
For both the directions state
1. Do not open outer package until ready to use.
2. Remove warmer from outer package: shake to activate.
3. Do not open, puncture or tear warmer.
I have followed the directions exactly on cold days while hunting. I have found that they don’t seem to get warm enough. They do however get warm but on a 27 degree day is warm enough good enough? The package states the warmers heat up in 15-30 minutes. If heat decreases, expose warmer to air and shake.
I can not tell you how many minutes I spend shaking these things up trying to get them warmer. I would shake them then stick them back down in my boots or my gloves and continue with my hunt. Then pull them back out spend another 10-20 minutes shaking them up. The package says average temperature is 135*F (57*C). It was getting frustrating, in no way did they feel they were reaching this temperature at all.
I would go home freezing. Lay them (the warmers) beside my bed intending on throwing them away later sometimes forgetting about them for a few hours. Then when I finally remembered I would go to throw them away and get and realize they seemed really hot. This was so frustrating to me! Why wouldn’t they get this hot while I was freezing in my deer stand?
So then I got to thinking what was the difference? The difference was I laid them out for hours unattended. So I wanted to test something. I drive about 45 minutes to my hunting spot, then walk about 20-30 minutes to my stand. So why not try and open the warmers before I left my house? So I tried it. What a difference that made! I now open how ever many I want usually 2 for each boot and 2 for my hands before I leave the house. I shake them and leave them lay on my passenger seat. As I put on my harness and coveralls I then place the warmers where they need to be. They now keep me warm with no issues. Definitely reaching the promised temperature!
I have used this product for many years and not just for hunting. I use them on Halloweekends to keep my kids and I warm, at Friday night football games.
