American Wilderness Leadership School - SCIF Sables (Application links attached)

2015-Sables-Logo-1024x800Chances are you have not have heard of the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS). This is a program offered to Educators and Students through the Safari Club International Foundation (Sables)created to touch the lives of thousands of youths.

Established in 1976 with the vision of providing educators with a useful hands-on experience that they can bring home to their classrooms, AWLS has provided an accredited conservation education program for nearly 6,000 teachers who reach more than a million students annually and a challenging experience for 1,700 high school students.

The Leadership School is located near Jackson, Wyoming, where SCI owns a property called Granite Ranch. Each summer AWLS offers workshops for Educators and Student Leaders on conservation and the role that hunting plays in it.

The Conservation Education Curriculum for Educators includes:

  •  Wildlife conservation and management in the United States based on the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation.
  • Land Management issues - effects on wildlife and stream studies.
  • Endangered species and outdoors ethics.
  • Wyoming Ecosystems
  • Economic contribution of sportsmen in conservation.
  • Instructional materials to use in outdoor education programs.

2016 Teacher Application Link

The Student Session presents a base knowledge of:

  • Wildlife ecology and conservation learning and becomes a central point around which leadership training is provided
  • The program offers recreational activities including overnight camping, whitewater rafting trip, etc.
  • There ARE qualifications for the Student program. Please read the application to see if you qualify to attend!!!

There are opportunities for Educators and Students to be sponsored through local SCI Chapters. By sponsoring Students and Educators, the SCI Chapters bring the knowledge learned back into their own communities.
