Selfie Sticks vs. Outdoors....a Mother's reflection on her daughters upbringing
This Christmas the Selfie Stick as the "it" thing.
It literally is a stick to hold your picture taking device so as to get a better photo of yourself to share with the world on every social media outlet. Sadly, the youth of today see this as an opportunity to post pictures that would make my grandmother blush.
As a mother of 3 young girls and living in Southern California I worry very much about the things my kids see and hear. My 6 year old only wants to look at the "adult" Halloween costumes and fights me most mornings on what she is going to wear to school. Girls tease her if something is wrong with what she is wearing. It breaks my heart. What are we teaching this next generation? That they are to be judged on how they look? That men only "want" us if we look and act like hookers?
There are a lot of places to lay blame. Too many to list.
I am going to do it differently. I am encouraging my girls to go outdoors and have hunting, fishing, hiking, diving, shooting, adventures whenever they can. If they have a skill and a confidence that earned by having something to be proud of hopefully they will avoid the pitfalls of so many of their peers. They will be confident, self sufficient and independent. Who's with me?
Hunting and Fishing are a ways for our daughters to be outdoors and enjoy nature while spending time with their families
The era of the Self-Sustainable Hunter-Gatherers are here and they wear pink.
