How Do the Colors of a Turkey’s Feathers Help it Survive in the Wild?

The colors of a turkey’s feathers help it survive in the wild by providing both camouflage and communication. Wild turkeys have dark, iridescent feathers that shimmer with bronze, green, copper, and gold tones. These earthy, shifting colors blend into forest shadows and underbrush making it harder for predators to spot them.Their feathers blend in well with the forest floor and leaf litter. This helps turkeys stay hidden from predators such as coyotes, bobcats and hawks, especially while nesting and roosting. 

During mating season, males (called toms or gobblers) use their colorful feathers for communication to attract females. The iridescent feathers shimmer with greens, purples, and boxes in the sunlight. They puff out their bodies, fan their tails, and strut to show off the vibrant sheen of their plumage. The brighter and healthier the feathers look, the more attractive they are to hens. However, they only display this when necessary to attract a mate. They rely on camouflage at all other times. A turkey's tail fan, body posture, and head color changes can signal dominance or alert other turkeys to danger. 

In short, turkey feathers aren’t just pretty. They are also a survival tool, both for hiding and impressing!
