Mother/Daughter Turkey Hunt

Each year the San Diego Chapter of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation has a couple of opportunities for kids to pull for hunts on private land and we asked Abby if she would like to try for a hunt. She’s a lucky girl and her name was pulled for both opportunities! March 18th was her date and she was set to hunt on the Santa Ysabel preserve with a mentor from the NWTF and me. Only 20 people are allowed to hunt on this preserve each year and it is the kids on the Saturday and Sunday of this Mentored Youth Hunt so it’s a special deal. They close the hunt area to the public so it remains safe for all.

Nature’s Paint Face Paint – RCG Product Review

Growing up I never used face paint. Honestly, growing up hunting was a lot different than it is now. It was simple, much simpler before social media and staff positions/sponsorships. With that being said, one thing remains true and that is my passion for hunting and being able to provide organic meat for my family.

2017 Deer Season and a few Big Lessons

I haven’t always been a hunter; it wasn’t until I met my husband that I was even interested in it, even though I’ve always been a wild game eater. Now, 3 years in to being a huntress, I couldn’t imagine my life without hunting. There is nothing quite like spending a day out in the back country. Even though I have been hunting for 3 years, 2017 was my hardest year so far for deer hunting.

Asparagus 101

Asparagus is great whether it's from the ditch, woods, or garden. In my house it's a kitchen staple. My family bought our little 65-acre hobby farm in November of 2004 and started our asparagus patch the following summer. The bed didn't produce the five-pound cuttings back then like it does today. Here are our secrets to great success in growing asparagus at home:

If you're lucky enough to be out during a caddisfly hatch be prepared for some epic trout fishing!

Teach Kids to be Passionate About the Outdoors

I was lucky enough to teach an outdoor class for fish dissection at our Bear Creek Days for schools in southwest Montana. I loaded up 50 rainbow trout from the Ennis National Fish Hatchery and took them to our camp ground at the base of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness where several schools from the area had a field trip week. They learned about all the insides of a trout as well as the history of native trout and fish verses nonnative introduced fish of Montana. It was a very rewarding day to hang out with 8th graders who loved getting their hands dirty. But that isn’t what completely set apart that day from any other.

RCG Product Review- XXX Agra Floatant

Over the years I've been frustrated trying to find a decent fly floatant. Well, I think I may have found it, XXX Agra! I stumbled upon it at my local fly shop last summer and figured, why not? I've tried so many other products this can't be any worse. Of course the label made me laugh, with a warning that says: If your fly stays up for more than 4 hours consult your local fly shop! Well, my fly didn't last 4 hours, but I caught about a dozen trout on our local river on the one fly until it came apart!

RCG RECIPE - MOUNTAIN LION NUGGETS

A lot of people ask me what my favorite wild game meat is. If I had to pick, I would definitely say mountain lion.

Not many people have tried mountain lion meat. If I had to describe it, it would be a cross between chicken and pork.

When you're done cooking it'll taste just like Chick-fil-a nuggets!
